A Visit to Travel Town

A Visit to Travel Town

After going over thousands of photos from over the years, I just realized that we are really into trains! From our useful local Metro, to abandoned trains of the past - we are just fascinated by them!

So in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, CA there is a park/museum that is entirely devoted to trains called Travel Town! They are open on Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm and Weekends from 10am to 5pm. So much history here!

A view from the tracks looking back at the main central hanger.

Opened since 1952 the Los Angeles City Recreation and Park Department has a unique display of vehicles representing many different modes and eras of railed conveyances. Free parking welcomes you in right off of Zoo Drive.

Steam enthusiasts, picnickers, families and friends come in to marvel at these metal giants!

Just look at how big these wheels are!

Pacific Electric, Skunkworks and Western Pacific logos colorfully coat the sides of these magnificent railed cars. I'm sure they have been restored, but they give you that old classic feel.

This 9-acre site is filled with trains, tracks, trolleys, and even a working miniature train that circles the interior perimeter for happy riders, young and old. When we went it was $2.50 per rider (but it may be more now.)

The totally packed miniature Steam Engine rounding the corner.

This is great for all ages! (Who doesn't love a little train ride!?) I know Walt Disney did!

These massive open-air hangers encapsulate these relics from the elements, keeping their paint bright and metal relatively unrusted.

#1 Engine

As a photographer, I tried to capture the vastness of this facility and the beautiful craftsmanship of these steam engines with low angles, up close detailed shots and additional pictures from all sides.

The weight, mass and scale of these metal monsters really takes hold when you are up close and personal with them. As far as I know, we were able to touch these (unless it said not to) and even climb up in a few of them!

Ooo, moody!

Also, remembering to capture my friends having a good time while frolicking around the old trains, even in silhouette, was so important to me and really captured the feeling of this beautiful Spring day!
